One anonymous collection of Japanese prints, sold over four days at Drouot Rive Gauche in December 1977.
This catalogue records an anonymous French collection of Japanese prints — the "Monsieur X…" of the title being the customary formula for a vendor who preferred not to be named. Among the illustrated books offered was a copy from the library of Edmond de Goncourt.
The sale covered surimono (摺物; privately commissioned prints, finely printed and often issued for poetry circles), e-goyomi (盲暦; picture calendars), hashira-e (柱絵; the tall, narrow pillar prints, called nagaye in the catalogue), ōban (大判; large-format sheets), drawings, illustrated books and stencils.
Artists represented include Keisai Eisen, Yashima Gakutei, Totoya Hokkei, Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Kunisada, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Ryūryūkyo Shinsai, Kubo Shunman, Kitagawa Utamaro and Utagawa Hiroshige, among many others.
Extensively illustrated throughout, chiefly in black and white, with four plates in colour.
